I just got my first rejection letter! Woo-hoo! I thought I handled it pretty well, considering it was 5 pm on Christmas Eve. Part of me wondered what kind of diabolical company sends out rejections with timing like that unless they are trying to increase the suicide rate, but I'll give them the benefit of the doubt--I'm sure they are just super-de-duper, hard working people meeting their deadlines before the holidays. Anyway, it was a very thin envelope and a very short letter. I think I was mostly depressed about that. I find myself wondering, how much did they really read? What was the turn off? Was it the topic? The first line choice? Did it bore them? Or was it simply not their style? Did they get two books about missionaries and they liked the other one more? Did they get another book they liked just as much, but by someone who had actually put some work into selling themselves more than I have, and they already had a personal relationship with?
So, to say the least, it's been a very introspective weekend. I have been evaluating myself, my motives, my determination, my time and use of it, my talents and weaknesses. What better way to start off the new year than with a new perspective.
So, thank you, dear publishing company, thank you very much.
